Fort Bend County Crossroads
Apartments in Arcola, TX
Welcome to Arcola, a small Fort Bend County city along Highway 6 in the Houston metropolitan area.
Arcola is a small incorporated city in northeastern Fort Bend County, Texas, within the Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown metropolitan area. It sits along Highway 6 southwest of Houston, near the Brazos River and just north of the large planned community of Sienna, in a part of the county that has experienced decades of suburban growth. Arcola's roots run deeper than its modern surroundings suggest: the community grew slowly through the twentieth century, and three state historical markers along Highway 6 commemorate some of the area's earliest settlers, anchoring the city's identity in the agricultural history of the Brazos River bottoms. The city incorporated in 1986, when its population stood at about 661. That step came as the surrounding region began its transformation from farmland and small crossroads settlements into one of the fastest-growing suburban corridors in the Houston area. Arcola has grown along with it, reaching a population of roughly 2,000 by the 2020 census, though it has remained a modest, lightly developed municipality compared with the larger planned communities that now surround it, including Sienna to the south and Missouri City to the northeast. Arcola's appeal is largely positional. It offers a small-town, semi-rural character while sitting within minutes of the employment, retail, and services of Fort Bend County and southwest Houston. Public school students attend the Fort Bend Independent School District, one of the state's largest districts, with schools such as Heritage Rose Elementary and Hightower High School serving the area. For residents, Arcola represents a quieter alternative within a rapidly suburbanizing landscape, a place that has retained its own name and history even as the region has grown up around it.
