Deep East Texas Timber & Lake Town

Apartments in Burkeville, TX

Welcome to Burkeville, a small Newton County community in Deep East Texas, near the Sabine River and Toledo Bend Reservoir.

Burkeville is a small city in Newton County, Texas, in the piney woods of Deep East Texas near the Louisiana border. The community has deep roots: it served as the Newton County seat from 1848 until 1853, when the county government shifted between Burkeville and Newton before settling permanently in Newton in 1856. During the Civil War, Burkeville hosted a Confederate arsenal, and its early economy ran on agriculture and trade before the lumber industry arrived. A catastrophic fire in 1906 destroyed nearly all of the town's businesses, but the community rebuilt around its churches, school, and the surrounding timber economy. Today Burkeville is a quiet rural community of roughly 500 residents. The single-campus Burkeville Independent School District, serving a few hundred students, is the town's central institution, and daily life revolves around school, church, and the land. Timber, ranching, and lake recreation shape the local economy, and the community's location near the Sabine River places it close to some of East Texas' most popular outdoor destinations. Toledo Bend Reservoir, one of the largest man-made lakes in the South, lies a short drive to the east on the Texas–Louisiana line, drawing anglers, boaters, and campers. The surrounding Angelina and Sabine national forests offer hunting and hiking, and the nearby towns of Newton and Jasper provide retail and healthcare. Residents value the unhurried pace, the shade of the pines, and the sense of continuity that comes from a community that has weathered fire, economic change, and the shifting fortunes of the timber era. Burkeville suits people seeking a quiet, affordable home in the East Texas woods, with recreation and small-town life close at hand.
