Dime Box is a small unincorporated community in eastern Lee County, Texas, about 12 miles northeast of Giddings and roughly midway between Austin and the Brazos Valley. It is one of those Texas places best known for its name, but the story behind it is grounded in everyday nineteenth-century life. The settlement began between 1869 and 1877 as Brown's Mill, a sawmill community near what is now State Highway 21. When the post office reopened in 1884 after a brief closure, the name was changed to Dime Box to avoid confusion with Brownsville — chosen, by local account, for the custom of leaving a dime in a box as payment for the person who carried the mail out from Giddings. The town's geography shifted in 1913, when the Southern Pacific Railroad built a line about three miles away. Much of the community relocated to be near the tracks, and the new railroad town took the name Dime Box while the original site became known as Old Dime Box. That split between the two townsites is still part of local identity today. Dime Box is a small, largely agricultural community of about 200 residents. The surrounding landscape is rolling prairie and ranchland, with farms and scattered acreage homes between the two townsites. Its heritage is strongly Czech-Texan, part of a broader settlement pattern that shaped Lee County and neighboring Fayette and Burleson counties through the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The community is served by the Dime Box Independent School District, a small district whose Longhorn mascot anchors local school pride. Daily needs send residents a short drive to Giddings, the county seat, for groceries, healthcare, and services. Dime Box offers a genuine, unhurried slice of rural central Texas, prized for its history, its land, and its low-key way of life.
