Rural McLennan County Town

Apartments in Gholson, TX

Welcome to Gholson, a quiet rural city in northern McLennan County, about twelve miles northwest of Waco.

Gholson is a small incorporated city in northern McLennan County, Texas, set in the gently rolling farmland about twelve miles northwest of Waco at the junction of Farm roads 933 and 1858. Although it lies within the Waco metropolitan area, the community has held onto the rural, agricultural character of its origins. The area was settled in the late 1840s and first known as Sardis, and its first school was built in 1854. It was later renamed for the Gholson brothers, early settlers whose family name the town still carries. For much of its history, Gholson remained a small farming crossroads tied to the surrounding countryside. Its population grew steadily from the 1980s onward as families sought a rural setting within commuting distance of Waco, rising from under 700 residents in 1990 to more than 1,200 today. The community remains compact and low-density, with homes spread among fields, ranchland, and the quiet farm-to-market roads that define the area. The Gholson Independent School District is the heart of the community, operating a single campus that serves students from pre-kindergarten through high school and drawing residents together around local school life. That small-school identity, combined with the short drive to Waco's employers, Baylor University, and amenities, gives Gholson its distinctive appeal. The town's setting in northern McLennan County places it close to the Bosque River country and the rural landscape between Waco and the communities to the north and west. Residents can reach the Brazos River, Cameron Park, and Lake Waco within a short drive, while the town itself stays quiet and spread out. For buyers who want country living with city access in Central Texas, Gholson offers a small, close-knit town with deep agricultural roots and an unhurried pace.
