Huntington is a small city in eastern Angelina County, Texas, located on U.S. Highway 69 roughly ten miles southeast of Lufkin and midway along the corridor toward Zavalla. The town traces its beginnings to 1900, when investors laid out lots after the Southern Pacific Railroad extended through the area; it took its name from Collis P. Huntington, the railroad chairman and one of the "Big Four" who built the Central Pacific and Southern Pacific systems. For most of its history Huntington has been tied to the timber economy of the East Texas Piney Woods. The surrounding region was logged heavily in the early twentieth century, and the town grew as a small rail-served trade center for the surrounding farms and woodlands. That heritage still shapes the area, which remains lightly developed and forested, with Sam Rayburn Reservoir and the Angelina National Forest immediately to the east. With a 2020 census population of 2,025, Huntington remains a compact, close-knit community. Its day-to-day life is quiet and small-town, while Lufkin, the Angelina County seat and the region's largest city, supplies shopping, healthcare, and employment just a short drive to the northwest.
