Piney Woods Railroad Town

Apartments in Naples, TX

Welcome to Naples, a Morris County city in the East Texas Piney Woods, near Lake O' the Pines and the region's lakes and timberland.

Naples is a city in Morris County, Texas, in the Piney Woods region of the state's far northeast. Its population was 1,387 at the 2020 census. The town sits among the pine forests, small farms, and lakes that define this corner of East Texas, with Morris County's seat, Daingerfield, a short drive to the south and the larger regional centers of Mount Pleasant and Texarkana within reach. Naples was built by the railroad. The Texas and St. Louis Railway laid its line through the area in 1880, and the town grew up around the new station, drawing merchants from the older settlement of Wheatville, which lay about three miles to the north. The community was briefly known as Belden before taking the name Naples, and its compact street grid and historic commercial core still reflect that nineteenth-century railroad origin. The city functions today as a quiet residential and agricultural center. Its identity is closely tied to the Pewitt Consolidated Independent School District, formed in 1950 to unite the schools of Naples and neighboring Omaha, and the district's campuses are a focal point of local life. Timber, farming, and lakeside recreation shape the broader economy and culture of the area. Naples is particularly defined by its proximity to Lake O' the Pines, a large reservoir on Big Cypress Bayou formed by Ferrell's Bridge Dam. The lake offers boating, fishing, camping, and birding, including wintering bald eagles, and draws both residents and visitors to the surrounding shoreline. For those living in Naples, the combination of a historic small town, a consolidated community school district, and ready access to one of East Texas's major lakes gives the city a distinctive, unhurried character.
