Palo Pinto County Seat

Apartments in Palo Pinto, TX

Welcome to Palo Pinto, the small county seat of Palo Pinto County, set among north-central Texas hills near Possum Kingdom Lake.

Palo Pinto is a small town and the county seat of Palo Pinto County, in north-central Texas, situated on U.S. Highway 180 in the rolling hills west of the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. With roughly 250 residents, it is one of the smallest county seats in the region, and its modest size belies its long history as the governmental center of a county of about 28,000 people. Mineral Wells, the county's largest city, lies about twelve miles to the east. The town's quiet scale is rooted in its history. In 1880, Palo Pinto was bypassed by the Texas and Pacific Railway, a decision that limited its growth while nearby railroad towns expanded. Nevertheless, the county seat remained in Palo Pinto, and the town retained its businesses and civic institutions. Today its most prominent landmark is the historic Palo Pinto County Courthouse, which anchors the town square and remains a symbol of the county's identity. Palo Pinto's appeal today is tied to its setting and its history rather than commerce. The town sits near several of the region's most important recreational resources: Possum Kingdom Lake and Lake Palo Pinto offer boating and fishing, and the newer Palo Pinto Mountains State Park extends hiking and camping opportunities into the surrounding hills. Public education is anchored by the Palo Pinto Independent School District, a small rural district operating Palo Pinto Elementary, while older students attend neighboring county districts. For residents, Palo Pinto offers a quiet, affordable small-town way of life in the heart of north-central Texas, with lakes, hills, and open ranchland as its backdrop.
