Deep East Texas Timber Town

Apartments in Spurger, TX

Welcome to Spurger, a small Tyler County community in the Deep East Texas timber country along the Neches River, near B.A. Steinhagen Lake.

Spurger is an unincorporated community in Tyler County, Texas, set in the pine and hardwood timber country of Deep East Texas. It sits along Farm Road 92, between the county seat of Woodville to the west and the town of Jasper to the east, in a region threaded by the Neches River and its forested bottomlands. The Hasinai Indians called the Neches the "Snow River," a name that persists as a local tag for the Spurger area. Settlement in the Spurger vicinity began as early as 1834, making it one of the older parts of the county. The community took its name from the Spurger family, early landowners in the area, and it grew slowly as a farming and timber settlement. A school has served the community since 1859, and the post office opened in 1881. Spurger peaked around 500 residents in the 1920s before declining, and today it remains a small, close-knit community of a few hundred people. Timber and the land still define life around Spurger. The surrounding country is a mix of pine plantations, hardwood bottoms, and small farms, and the nearby Neches River and B.A. Steinhagen Lake anchor the area's recreation. Martin Dies Jr. State Park, on the shore of Steinhagen Lake, protects bottomland forest and offers some of the best paddling in East Texas, while the lake's Sandy Creek and Magnolia Ridge parks provide camping and fishing. Spurger Independent School District, a small K–12 system on Farm Road 92, is the community's institutional center. Residents rely on Woodville and Jasper for most shopping and services, while the forests, river, and lake supply a quiet, outdoors-oriented way of life. The community lies roughly two hours north of Houston, reachable via U.S. 190 and the U.S. 59 corridor. For those seeking a rural East Texas setting, Spurger offers deep history, low density, and easy access to the river and lake country.
