The community is also home to a cluster of rural institutions, including the Texas Catholic Boys Camp, established by the Society of Mary in 1951; the Texas Fisheries Research Station; and the Hill Country Cowboy Camp Meeting. Mountain Home's population has always been small — about 150 residents in 1946, and roughly 60 people within a one-mile radius of the post office by the 1980s, with that post office serving some 350 area families. The community has long included a store, a motel, and a church, serving the ranches and camps scattered across the surrounding Hill Country. The community's unincorporated status and its setting among the hills, creeks, and ranchlands of Kerr County keep it a quiet, spread-out place.
